I hope there is class and character balance such that its actually possible to be any of the full mix of possibilities. Yes, there will be the very common combinations. I just hope they arent the only ones we see.
Myself, I'll be picking what I like, and wont be going by what looks best on paper stat/race-wise. Sylvari look like my kind of character too, from the little I've seen of them.

I just think it's crazy that we have learned NOTHING about the Sylvari yet, seeing as how it will be a caster class... it's gonna be a major choice for GW2 Monks, the asura, the human, or the Sylvari!
I don't know about anyone else... but I have a feeling Anet might trash the Sylvari and go with the Dwarves, like many of us wanted to play in GW2. Well, that's my two cents. Comment.

Dwarves are gone, few remain, and they are all very very rare. Sylvari will be in GW2, all we find out about the Sylvari in EN is how they are born, we never see one.

You dolt, Norn don't use the blessing skills. That is a fact. There is a reason why Ursan is called Ursan BLESSING, it is a blessing from the bear spirit. Norn 'Become the bear' *turn into a werebear as seen whenever they fight. And they can supposedly turn into a werewolf as well *and probably other were-things*.

As pointed out, you can find a Warrior Asuran. You can also find a Necromancer Norn. And Charr use all 10 professions in EN. So I doubt that there will be race-specific professions. What is possible are Race-specific skills and/or attributes. Such as more health for Norn and more energy for Asura *my guesses through the title buffs*. And race-specific attributes/skills won't surprise me because I have noted that some non-human NPCs run faster then our characters without speed buffs, so that right there is a possible buff for races.

Not sure about trashing Sylvari...its on the official GWWiki site..http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Race not much info, but you never know.
removing sylvari after hyping them up would be lame.

Anet would never let people play a dwarf. That would be like them letting people play an elf. It's so insanely vanilla-blah-tired RPG schlock that they wouldn't go that route.

Looks like an elf (or pixie) to me...so, why not be able to play a dwarf then?

But regardless, why do people want to play the same old worn-out races that they've played in literally every RPG for the past 20 years? Isn't it time to consider something new(ish)?

Because they rushed the dang thing out the door so they could work full-time on Guild Wars 2. GW:EN is saddening. So much potential, rushed. People think that ANet intentionally recycled content because they're a bunch of lazy bums, but they ran out of time. The section the Preview Weekend had was the part they managed to completely polish. The rest is where you see recycling when they rushed to hit the deadline.
That said, I have faith that ANet will blow our ever-loving socks off with Guild Wars 2, because they've been so dang busy working on the thing without telling us squat that anything GW is half-hearted. When it comes to people with a passion (if you read any interviews, ANet has plenty of it), half-heartedness in one arena means the full enchilada is going toward something else.
[/offtopic]
The Sylvari I think are the least nailed-down race of all of them, hence the lack of information about them. Any day now we should get some mass information reveal, and then we'll know "all", relatively speaking.

Funny, cause they already have. Sylvari are already in GW2 along with dwarves.

I haven't played any other races than the ones mentioned above. GW2 is still has a long way to go in development so if anything changes I'll be sure to post it here and update the wiki.

Sorry if i'm being naïve or something, but are you playing GW2 already? Because as far as i can remember in GW1 we can only play (as main characters) humans. Are you saying that you played others? How? (Heroes doesn't count)
Also, there are no Dwarves in GW2, at least not playable ones. Nothing on the wikis or anywhere else says otherwise, in the end they could change i suppose, but as it stands now they aren't announced as playable races.
Btw, some old info that might be forgotten by many people....The best things in life are free

From that, we can either interpret that other races are going to be added in later expansions, or that there are more than just the anounced races, OR even both.
Also

So a Norn warrior is going to have this were-bear ability, while a Human warrior will have a completely different ability just as significant - though we're still throwing around exactly what it will be.
So people who like playing as warriors are going to get a lot of variety out of choosing whether they want to be a Norn, an Asura, or Human warrior - as those are all going to feel very different.

What i understand from there is that each race will have abilities of their own, and not just cosmetics.
And finally

Not that i'm saying you're wrong or anything, but where did you get that from? Cuz as much as it seems they borrow qualities from other Totemic Spirits, it seems that the Bear is their only and real "Father", and thus they can assume their form, their strength. I wouldn't be surprised if they get stuff like Hawk Eyes , Owl's Wisdom, Wolf's Scent, Raven's ability related to death, and so on, but i think shape-shifting is limited to bear form only. Again, I'm not saying you're wrong as we can't know anything for sure, until we see it.

Really? To me it kinda reminds of Beorn in The Hobbit (basicly a huge guy that could become a huge bear), which came like several years earlier... which in turn was prolly copied from some other source, which in turn was copied from.... .... ....

Exactly my thinking. I think it's nice that someone is finally deviating from the dwarf/elf/orc stereotypes that we see in every other fantasy RPG, and giving us some creative new creatures (some might argue differently, and might compare the GW races to other, already established beasts, but that's to be expected. Everything nowadays is based off something else, so similarities are obviously going to occur. The GW races do differ in some ways, though, which is nice).
I was hoping the Sylvari would look more like the Dervish's Avatar of Melandru, or better yet, something like this:
But I guess I can live with the whole Nymph/Dryad look.

Yeah, it is tiring that everyone seems to think that WoW introduced all these new concepts, like shapeshifting and mounts and persistant worlds. There's no point arguing, however. People will always compare things with what they are familiar with.
